Bone Marrow Morphology

This test evaluates the morphology of bone marrow samples. Findings provide critical information for the diagnosis and management of blood disorders.

Specimen Requirements
  • Indication / history: please provide an indication for bone marrow examination and, if applicable, a pertinent history of the patient (prior bone marrow specimen results, prior therapies, including transplantations, etc.)
  • CBC: a contemporaneous hemogram (CBC) should be submitted.
  • Peripheral blood smears.
  • Bone marrow aspirate smears.
  • Bone marrow touch imprints (please always perform touch imprints, not only in “dry tap” situations.
  • Bone marrow core biopsy (at least 1.5 cm in length).
  • Bone marrow clot: if there is aspirate left after smears are performed, please place the remaining fluid directly into formalin or AZF (preferably.)

Storage and Transportation

All specimens should be packaged securely to prevent damage. Slides, blocks, and fixed tissue may be shipped at room temperature, while fresh samples should be kept refrigerated with cold packs and sent the same day for best quality.
