Specimen Requirements
  • Indication / history.
  • CBC: a contemporaneous hemogram (CBC) should be submitted along with the smears.
  • Blood smears need to be done within 2 hours of collection. After two hours the viability of the cells decreases exponentially, and the cellular morphology becomes unreliable.
  • If the client is local, the EDTA tube can be shipped directly to Vitro Laboratories for processing.

Storage and Transportation

All specimens should be packaged securely to prevent damage. Slides, blocks, and fixed tissue may be shipped at room temperature, while fresh samples should be kept refrigerated with cold packs and sent the same day for best quality.
