Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

Identifies a glycoprotein localized to the cytoplasm of acinar and ductal epithelial cells of normal, benign, and malignant prostate tissue. It is a highly sensitive and specific marker for metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma. PSA produced by prostate cancer is immunologically and biochemically similar to that of normal prostate. Because it does not react with non-prostatic tumors, PSA is valuable for determining whether an isolated metastasis is of prostatic origin.
